Father William H. McCain peacefully passed away on April 13, 2023.  Born March 13, 1957, Father McCain was ordained in 1986 and served in many parishes and positions throughout the Archdiocese including St. John the Evangelist Parish, Church of the Epiphany Parish, Our Lady of Loretto Parish, Church of the Visitation Parish, Saint Raphael Parish, and Saint Finn Barr Parish. He also served as Director of On-Going Formation and Continuing Education for the Clergy.

Father McCain was the cherished first-born son of the late Billy George and Antonia McCain, the beloved brother of Robert McCain and Cristina McCain Gonzalez (brother-in-law Robert), and the esteemed uncle of Chevon, Robert, Monica, and Alyssa Gonzalez.

Father was a proud graduate of St. Ignatius College Preparatory ’75, St. Patrick’s College Seminary ’79 (B.A.), and St. Patrick’s Seminary Theologate, Menlo Park, ’84 (M.Div.). He received his Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) in Biblical Studies from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, ’07.

Father was ordained to the Priesthood on the 22nd of November 1986 by Archbishop John R. Quinn, D.D. and served in numerous assignments. As a Deacon he served at St. Gabriel and Immaculate Heart of Mary Parishes. He was parochial vicar at St. John the Evangelist, Epiphany, Visitation and St. Raphael Parishes. Father McCain also served as pastor of Our Lady of Loretto and St. Finn Barr Parishes. In recent years, Father McCain was appointed as Director of On-Going Formation and Continuing Education for the Clergy of the Archdiocese.

You are invited to join his family, friends, parishioners, and brother priests in praying for Father’s eternal repose. A rosary and vigil will be at Mission Dolores Basilica, 3321 16th St @ Dolores, San Francisco, CA on Thursday, April 20th, 6:00p.m. (schoolyard parking off Church Street). A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 21st, 10:00a.m. at Mission Dolores Basilica (schoolyard parking off Church Street and island parking on Dolores Street in front of the Basilica). Burial will be at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, Colma.
