The Rev. William M. Miller, 75, died Friday, August 22, 2003 after a serious illness. He is deeply mourned by his sister, Sister Marie Corona of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill; by a niece and nephew, Kerry Anne (Marc) Nellist and Dr. Mark (Susie) Shaffer, and their children, Marc Jr., Melissa and Kristina Nellist and Meggi and Andrew Shaffer; by his cousins, Donnie and Joann Geibel and their families in Butler; and by his many friends and former parishioners.
Father Bill, as he was affectionately known, was the son of William and Hilda Miller of Hays, Pa.; and brother of the late Joan Shaffer, of Georgia. Having spent his childhood in Butler, he attended St. Paul Elementary and Butler High schools. He served in Germany in the Army Medical Corps in World War II. Later he studied for the priesthood at St. Vincent Seminary in Latrobe and was ordained May 26, 1956. After serving in many Pittsburgh parishes, he was named pastor of St. Columbkille Church where he remained for 17 years, serving as well in the itinerary ministry to several parishes.
An active member of the National Catholic Cemetery Association, he has been priest-consultant for the Pittsburgh Catholic Cemetery system. Retired from active ministry for several years, he has continued to minister at Kane Hospital, Scott Township and at S.S. Simon and Jude Parish, Greentree.
MILLER – Friends of the Rev. William M. Miller, who died Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICES, 1650 Greentree Road, Scott Township. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at S.S. Simon and Jude Church with Bishop Donald Wuerl as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill, 463 Mt. Thor Road, Greensburg, PA 15601.
