In Loving Memory of Reverend Kenneth Robert Kaucheck
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Fr. Ken, a devoted son, brother, uncle, godfather, friend, and servant of God, who peacefully joined the heavenly choir on July18, 2024 at the age of 77, after a valiant battle with cancer.
Fr. Ken was born on October 14, 1946, in Highland Park, Michigan, the youngest son of Madeline (née Quinlan) and Jacob (Jack) Kaucheck. The family of four which included Fr. Ken’s beloved older brother Larry, lived first on Strasburg St. in Detroit before settling in the Grosse Pointe area where Fr. Ken enjoyed a happy childhood.
A dedicated intellectual and a voracious reader, Fr. Ken excelled in academic endeavors as evidenced by his facility with languages and his many degrees: BA in Philosophy from his cherished Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Masters in Theology, Masters in Divinity, Licenciate and Doctorate in Canon Law from the Gregorian University in Rome, Italy, and finally a Doctorate in Ministry.
Ordained as a Catholic priest on February 28, 1976, Fr. Ken embarked on a remarkable journey, touching countless lives throughout his 48 years of faithful service. His compassionate spirit and innate ability to connect with people from all walks of life made him a beloved figure in our community.
Fr. Ken served as an associate pastor at Guardian Angels, Sacred Heart Dearborn, and Christ the King parishes. In 1982 he became pastor of Epiphany, followed by St. Anastasia, Our Lady Star of the Sea, and finally St. James and St. Mary’s parishes. Fr. Ken dedicated himself to guiding and nurturing his parishioners, providing spiritual solace, and instilling hope in their hearts. His homilies were not mere words but a source of inspiration, encouraging all to live lives of compassion, humility, and love. He was a true shepherd, always ready to lend an empathetic ear, offer guidance, and extend a helping hand to those in need.
Teaching was a passion of his and he was on faculty at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, St Cyril and Methodius Seminary and Madonna University. He was certified in Ignatian Spirituality and served as a spiritual director to many and led more than 500 individual directed retreats as well as more than 200 group retreats for parishes and other organizations. His love of travel propelled him to lead countless pilgrimages to Europe and the Holy Land.
Beyond the walls of the church, Fr. Ken actively participated in various charitable endeavors, most recently co-founding Gianna House, a residency program for pregnant young women, and mothers with new babies which offered not only safe housing but also parenting and life skills. Fr. Ken recognized the importance of living out the Gospel message through acts of kindness and service. His commitment to social justice and advocacy for the marginalized were a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication.
Fr. Ken was a lover of all sports, both as a participant and a fan. He enjoyed going to the gym, playing tennis, and watching the Lions and Tigers. He relished watching the resurgence of Detroit, the city he called home, frequenting new restaurants and attending the Detroit Symphony Orchestra concerts as often as possible.
Fr. Ken’s warm smile, gentle demeanor, and unwavering faith touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. He was a beacon of hope and a source of strength in times of despair. His love for God and his flock was evident in every aspect of his life, making him a cherished figure in our community.
While we mourn the loss of a truly remarkable man, we take solace in the knowledge that Fr. Ken is now at peace, embraced by the heavenly love he so faithfully preached and rejoined with his cherished family, his parents, Madeline and Jack, and his older brother, Larry.
Fr. Ken is survived by his family: sister-in-law Ann Marie Kaucheck, his niece Kendra Goodrich (William), spiritually adopted son, Mark Calvird (Dorothy) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews from both the Quinlan and Kaucheck families, godchildren, friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his ministry.
